B is for Brand. I am a CMO but I’m also a CBO. I’m a marketeer and brand expressionist, either wholly strategic or developing actionable plans. Connected growth is my focus. My area of excellence is connecting brand comms to business and marketing strategies - working on brand expression and translating concepts to tangible assets - which is often the missing link between the theory of brand strategy, commercial targets and the practical application of PR and marketing. I often surprise people by telling them NOT to do any marketing… until! Until the groundwork is in place, because any creative enterprise must be rooted in planning, strategy and insight. I have witnessed many businesses transform before my eyes as they realise how to work with, not alongside, their own brand.
Long before fractional was a fashionable moniker I was doing more than one thing for different types of company (in my career I have always been sector agnostic, something I see wholly as an advantage). So part of my time I’m a Director at a the raw dog & cat food company, following a rather random career segue from brand comms into manufacturing. There can be fewer places more intense to learn ALL the corporate skills than an entrepreneurial startup in a rapidly growing market. Doing so from a standing start - knowing nothing about machinery, compliance, logistics or much else - made this exceptionally hard. But the career kink that out to be not so random after, all as what links both is, ultimately, problem solving.
